Series: Scottish Brides #2
Author: Nicola Cornick

Age: Adult
A wicked attraction!

Fashionable society widow Lady Mairi MacLeod cannot understand the dark passion that binds her to Jack Rutherford. He is everything she dislikes in a man, rakish, arrogant and charming, and she would prefer to forget the night of wicked passion that she spent in his arms.

But when Mairi is threatened by a blackmailer, Jack is the only man who can protect her. As they work together to uncover where the danger lies, their passion reignites. Little by little, the masks they wear burn away, and their most private secrets come to light...
The second book from the Scottish Brides, One Night with the Laird, follows the story of Lady Mairi MacLeod and Jack Rutherford. Mairi is beautiful and a widow, and Jack is a charming rake. They don't get along at first, but after a wicked and very passionate night they spent together (without knowing they were each other), it's difficult to ignore their desire.

But Mairi has other problems beside her desire. She's being threatened by a blackmailer, who is going to divulge secrets of her husband to get what he wants. Jack is protecting her, and if that means having a fake engagement and spending more time together in the bedroom, better! But of course nothing is so easy when desire turns into love and both of them have to make peace with their troubled pasts before giving their hearts.

I enjoyed One Night with the Laird. It surprised me a little because it was much more wicked and sensual than the first book, The Lady and The Laird. But I still devoured it in one night. Sometimes it turned a little bit slow, with Mairi and Jack trying to overcome their pasts and hurting each other in the process, but I'm happy the characters got their happy ending.

Waiting on Wednesday: The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender by Leslye Walton

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Magical realism, lyrical prose, and the pain and passion of human love haunt this hypnotic generational saga.
Foolish love appears to be the Roux family birthright, an ominous forecast for its most recent progeny, Ava Lavender. Ava—in all other ways a normal girl—is born with the wings of a bird. In a quest to understand her peculiar disposition and a growing desire to fit in with her peers, sixteen-year old Ava ventures into the wider world, ill-prepared for what she might discover and naïve to the twisted motives of others. Others like the pious Nathaniel Sorrows, who mistakes Ava for an angel and whose obsession with her grows until the night of the Summer Solstice celebration. That night, the skies open up, rain and feathers fill the air, and Ava’s quest and her family’s saga build to a devastating crescendo. First-time author Leslye Walton has constructed a layered and unforgettable mythology of what it means to be born with hearts that are tragically, exquisitely human.
